But with so much choice how do you know which washing line or clothesline is best for you? Here's 5 tips to help you decide.

1. How much space do you have outside? Big gardens can contain a traditional rotary washing line, but for smaller gardens you might like to consider a fold down or retractable line. Both these options are designed to tuck away neatly when not in use. Fold down lines lie flat against the wall when not being used and retractable clothes lines tuck into a very small box. But retractable styled washing and clotheslines still need quite a lot of space when they are being used so a fold down one is your best option for small space.

2. What size do you need? With washing and clothes lines it is not as simple as one size fits all. Some washing line products have 60 metres or space available, others have about 25 metres. Look for compact versions for just one or two people. Standard sizes should accommodate a family of four, while super or extra large sizes are good for larger families.

3. Will you need to remove your line at anytime? There is more room for back yard cricket and big barbeques if the washing line is easy to remove or folds away neatly when not in use. Some lines are a permanent feature so check when choosing yours.

4. Do you need an inside line or laundry dryer too? For days when the weather is not great clothes can still dry indoors. Or perhaps you might like a small airer indoors for you underwear?

5. Some washing lines and clotheslines come with a 10 year guarantee. Make sure yours is top quality too. Of special importance is that the paint needs to be weather proof and the frame should not be made from plastic.
