References are better than testimonials because you can call references and ask them questions whereas testimonials are usually pre-printed statements that the customer simply signs. An agent that can't (or won't) provide either one is an agent that might not have a good reputation.

How large is your current workload? Selling or helping a home buyer purchase a home takes a lot of effort. It's not a part-time job by any means. While it's possible for a real estate agent to have several clients at once, there's a fine line between being busy and having too many clients. If you aren't comfortable with their workload and you think your needs would be better met by another agent, follow your instincts.

How many homes have you sold in the last six months? A reputable real estate agent should have a good ratio of homes sold to homes listed. If they haven't sold too many homes in the last few months, you might want to find a more motivated agent.
