Broadband and High Definition TV (HI-DEFTV) - Turn Your PC Into a Home Theater

With this era of fast internet which has made broadband TV enjoyable, I mean watching TV online with fast Internet, it still does not totally translate to watching clear Hi-Def with high picture quality on your computer system. With a high-definition broadcast from a digital satellite transmission, you assume that your TV will display with the crispest, sharpest picture imaginable. But the truth is Hi-Def doesn't always imply high quality.

First of all, a brief explanation of what High-Definition Television (HI-DEFTV) is: it is a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional television systems (SDTV). The main difference here that qualifies HI-DEF is simply having a lot of more pixels. This means literarily the more pixels the more high definite quality pictures. So many digital satellite transmissions vary in their 'high definition' picture quality.

There is no real regulation over high-definition picture quality at all. I did a random search to verify this and discovered to large extent that it is open. This is part of the reason why different HI-DEF stations often have wildly varying levels of picture quality that change from one moment to the next. This thus pitch content producers, broadcasters and cable and satellite providers who are engaged in a constant tug-of-war over bandwidth and video quality, with no hard metrics to even define what looks acceptable.

However for your TV or PC screen to be able to accommodate HI-DEF it must have either 720 horizontal lines of progressively scanned pixels (720p), 1080 lines of interlaced pixels (1080i) or 1080 lines of progressively scanned pixels (1080p, which nobody even broadcasts yet.) But there's a whole lot more to the quality of digital television than the number of pixels present. Most TV and Pc will pass this test, but will not qualify for most HI-DEF been broadcasts by these competing broadcasters and cable and satellite providers

Another critical factor in determining picture quality according to a source is bit rate, or how much video and audio data is being delivered down the pipe for every program. The technology behind digital television depends largely on digital compression, and the ATSC specifies that digital TV use the MPEG-2 compression standard, which is also utilized by DVDs, although some satellite broadcasters use the more efficient MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) standard.
