In most digital photography courses you will learn that anybody can pick up a camera, start to point and click and produce scores of snapshots, but in order to create a true professional looking image there are a few simple guidelines you can follow which will allow you to achieve incredible results time after time.

Composition: This is the single most important factor in the creation of any stunning image. Get this right and the rest will just fall into place. A lot of talented photographers create professional looking images intuitively and have a knack for getting the perfect composition... others have to apply a few rules and plan it out a little before hand. Either way, getting the composition right will be the make or break as it were of a that perfect shot.

We are going to take a look at a few simple rules, or guidelines that can be followed in order to create great composition in your images. These are however only guidelines as the rules are often broken and stunning results still achieved.

RULE OF THIRDS: The first technique to discuss is one of the oldest composition techniques used, it is known as the rule of thirds. this simple method is the same method that has been used by many of the great masters of painting throughout the centuries and is talked about in detail by Leonardo di Vinci.

Basically this rule consists of dividing your image up into thirds both horizontally and vertically. Imagine a grid over the photo dividing your image into 9 squares. This will give you 4 intersection points around what is the center square.

The idea is to create your image so that you have key elements on or near to any number of these intersection points as possible. Covering three of the four points will make an 'L' shape. This is a very popular and widely used composition form

As a side note here, when taking pictures of animals, if you can get the animal looking into the image then it draws the attention into the center which is very pleasing to the eye.

TRIANGLES: Another mechanism that can create really striking results is the use of triangles in your images. Lining up your subject to make triangles in your image can be very powerful whether they form one large triangle or multiple triangles.

IMPLIED LINES: Implied lines or lead-in lines are another way of strengthening the composition of your image. These are lines in your image that are implied by the surroundings.. they lead your eye into the image. The image of a jetty for example making a diagonal line from two of the key intersection points on the grid will draw your eye into the image. The lines don't necessarily have to straight a meandering path or a stream going into the image can be equally as powerful.

FRAME WITHIN FRAME: You can strengthen your composition by using elements of the foreground to create a natural frame for your image. A shot through trees and hedges etc can create great framing for the view through them.

REPETITION: Repetition can also be a useful technique when it comes to composing your image. Repeated images do a lot to draw the eye into the picture.

Here are a few other points to bear in mind when composing your images;

- Avoid confusion in your images - make your principle subject obvious and avoid cluttered backgrounds - Don't forget that you can turn the camera through 90 to take vertical pictures too. - Don't be afraid to experiment with angles... get down low or up high. - If doing a close up then get in as close as you can... the can be very effective with flowers.
