Keeping Kids' Tattoos and Piercings?

I seem to go through this all the time! Kids and their poor decisions on what to get and where to get them. I'm always amazed at the fact that they don't have a job but can get new puncture wounds on their skin. I guess it's a matter of knowing someone who pierces or has a tattoo gun!

I find that I have to work extra hard on teaching basic society rules to all my adult children. It seems to be an argument to get attention most of the time. The definition of "quality" time is changing before our eyes and alot of parents are missing it. The world is so fast pace now. Most of the kids run on doing before thinking. Wrong way to go!

My kids have a hard enough time staying employed. Yet, they continue to spend money on things that won't help them get a job. Where did they get the money to start with? Friends and family of course. Fighting with your kids over these things is NOT the way to go. Compromising is much better. Start out small and let them figure out if they can be a respectable product of society.

My biggest complaint as a parent is the lip piercing. I can't understand how they think they can get a job with rings in their lips! My first instinct is to clip a chain to it and walk them around! Maybe it is just me, but I'm not hiring anyone that has a lip piercing. The nose isn't quite as bad. I just picture them having a cold and all the snot stuck inside. Ewww! Girls seem to like a tiny stone of some sorts. That, I think is acceptable. It is just enough to add a feminine feature without some major facial disfiguration. Eyebrows? The smallest gauge of hoop possible is acceptable for most teenagers. Infection rank pretty high though. Ears? If the hole is bigger than an eraser, NO WAY! Most of the kids begin to look like Dumbo once the stretch their lobes out! GROSS! I think piercings are easier to work with because you can remove them and all is usually well in time.

Now, onto the tattoos again! The bigger the tattoo, the more they want to make a statement. They want it in color? They better start saving money like a 401k plan to touch it up when it fades. Let me remind you that I have my own tattoos too! I love them. Once you get one, you want another. They are addicting. One must be smart about where to place them.

Small, sentimental tattoos are seen as passionate in today's world. Yes, people still mourn their losses in this fashion. Most of my sons have huge tats on their bodies. It is a shame that they must cover them up at least 40 hours a week for going to work. Spending extra money on long sleeve shirts in the middle of summer is terrible. How about having to wear pants in 112 degrees? Think kids! Think!

I'm an artist too ya know? If I owned my own shop I would have more of them that could be seen.

If any of your kids want a tattoo, please remind them of what it will be like 10 years down the road. You don't want someone's name. You don't want a symbol that represents how you feel about something either. Your opinions change over time. Obscene or offensive words could make things a disaster for a relationship too.

I'm not saying that kids shouldn't get anything done. I'm simply saying that they need to learn about what it will be like after they do! It ends up costing you one way or another to fix it. Financially or emotionally!

Think, think, think!

Well, that's it for now. I hope everyone is having a great year. Kids are back in school for most of you.

I'm dedicated in everything I do! Life is nothing but chance and I seem to take my fair share in this world. Although success has many forms and definitions, I am happy with my accomplishments at the end of the day.

The hardest lesson I have learned thus far in my life is you MUST love yourself before you can love someone else. Be honest with yourself and you can be honest with others. Yes, we all have fears...that is your instinct trying to protect you.

Always show caution, look both ways to make sure it is clear, and leap into tomorrow. I have always said,"If you don't like where your at in life, MOVE!" Teresa Harr-Pena
