While they aren't edible they provide the mother-to-be with some of the essential items that will be needed in the first few months of the baby's life. What new mother doesn't need diapers, rattles, bibs or little booties?
It doesn't matter if you decide to go the traditional route or not, the expecting mother will appreciate the thought that you put into make their baby shower as special as it can be.
