You should also look to see how you can make this loss a constructive loss. I had a friend who died when I was 19 from drugs and after a long time of feeling sad and depressed about it, I allowed it to be a turning point for myself. I use that experience to change my life and become a more positive person and to let go of my own drug experimentation.

When you can allow the loss to make you decide to have a positive impact and to change your life, then that loss is not in vain. If you allow it to make your life worse, then it is.
