Size is Variable - Shape is Consistent

I remember clearly when I first began to understand the concept of dressing for my shape rather than my size. Somehow I'd managed to lose 20 pounds and, since I love beautiful clothes, I decided to reward myself. I took my new, svelter self off to the mall fully expecting that all those clothes I'd admired from a distance would suddenly now fit perfectly. I was devastated to find that all the same problems - boobs too big for my waist, butt with a life of its own, thighs that could double as fencing posts - still existed, though admittedly in a smaller package.

Our bodies have a specific shape, one that's predetermined by our genes. In short, we take after our parents. We assiduously take our parents medical history and we should also take an inventory of their body shapes, where they store fat and how gravity effects them as they get older. We instinctively understand that all the diet and exercise in the world is not going to make us any taller so why is it that we think it's going to change our genetic makeup? It's not. It's certainly possible to tone up our bodies but then we tone the whole of our bodies. If we have a specific tendency toward big boobs and large thighs that is not going to alter. They'll just be toned large thighs.

When it comes to clothes it's vital to work with the shape of your body, not just because it's better for your emotional health, but because fit is everything. One of the reasons celebrities look so freakishly good all the time is because their clothes are actually tailored to fit. Consequently anyone can achieve that same elegance and style, or at least a cheaper version, by wearing clothes that fit. To fit, it must work with the shape of your body, not just the size. Forget size completely. That's just guideline given by clothing manufacturers to help narrow down the amount of clothes to try on. Instead look for things that skim your body like they were made just for you.

One of the best things about shape being consistent is that inspiration can be stolen, sorry, borrowed from anyone of a similar shape. There are countless photos of celebrities circulating and we look to them for fashion inspiration. Find one that is the same shape as you and keep an eye out for something you can copy. And it doesn't matter if said celebrity is a different size to you as long as the shape is consistent. Something that suits a pear shaped size 4 will suit a pear shaped size 14.

This is not meant to be disheartening, it's meant to be liberating. The cornerstone of dressing for your body shape is self acceptance. It's about seeing yourself as you really are and finding the beauty that's already there. Your shape is yours, it's not going to change, so embrace it, love it, and get it some gorgeous shoes.
