Since the Internet's popularity began growing in the 1990's, it has been a place full of advertising. What is PPC?

Basically, the ad buyer chooses keywords to associate with his or her product. When someone enters that term in the Google search engine, his or her ad appears on the side of the page. If someone clicks on the ad, then the ad owner is charged.

The fee charged is set by the ad buyer. The amount of that fee helps determine the placement of the ad on the search engine results page for the designated keyword.

Other Types of PPC

Besides PPC Advertising on AdWords, other similar services are also available. For example, Yahoo Search Marketing is available. The service is very much like Google's AdWords but uses a slightly different formula for determining ad placement, although the fee still figures heavily into the ranking.

Another option is offered by MSN. Known as Microsoft adCenter, the service provides many of the same features as the other two. One difference is that ad buyers can specify when they want their listing to appear just as advertisers on radio and television can choose the right times for their commercials to be shown.
