Garage Door Buying and Replacement Tips

Garage doors have become a popular home improvement in the last 20 years or so. It used to be that garage doors took up a lot of space, were hard to open and close, and swung outward so sufficient room was needed to open them. Replacing your garage door will not only prove to be an aesthetic improvement but will also have other benefits that come with modernization.

Most garage doors are insulated which will not only keep your garage cool in the summer and warm in the winter but also keep sound from traveling if you have a workspace in your garage. They are much more secure than they used to be. Many of them require the remote door opener (usually in your car) or pin code to open so your valuables will be safe. They can also be hooked up to your home alarm system to deter intruders.

Garage doors come in a variety of material to fit your style and budget. Wood is the traditional material of choice but there is also steel, fiberglass and other composite materials that will give you the look of other materials, e.g. wood, marble, stone, etc. Lighter material will give you the look and protection you need without the high price and the door opening mechanism doesn't have to be heavy duty.

Most garage doors nowadays are horizontal panels that slide on a track. They are tongue and groove with seals between each panel to keep out wind and rain. The mechanisms to open and close the door come with safety devices so if the door is obstructed by something, e.g. a person, box, or car, the door will stop. Some have safety devices on the panels themselves to prevent fingers or other object from getting caught between them.

If you have a workspace in your garage you will probably want some natural light. You can have clear plastic windows placed in your garage door panels. The panels are usually small and placed near the top of the garage door so as to prevent intruders.

To find the garage door that is right for you, look for a company that specializes in garage doors. Most doors have to be custom made but if you live in a track house you may be able to buy a prefabricated door and save some money. You can also buy garage doors at large home improvement store. Professionals will assist you with finding the door that fits your style and budget.

Never try to install a garage door yourself. Not only is it technically difficult but there are special tools required for the large springs and the materials are heavy. Don't penny pinch. Use a professional to ensure the job is done right.
