How to Deal With EBook Refund Requests

Once you get your eBook publishing company up and running and start making sales, you will encounter an issue that all successful eBook publishers face: refund requests. Now it's perfectly natural to feel a bit upset when you first get started and are asked for a refund. But please believe me when I tell you that refund requests can be a blessing in disguise. Here's why. When someone requests a refund, it's usually because they were dissatisfied with some aspect of your eBook. If you're able to find out what the real reason for their refund request is, you can then remedy the problem and potentially avoid future refund requests.

So here's what you should do upon receiving a refund request. Promptly honor it. That's critical, because you want to respect the fact you've been asked for a refund. Next, personally e-mail the individual who has requested the refund (after the refund has been processed) to tell them that their refund is on the way. In that same e-mail, politely explain that to better serve your customers in the future, you'd appreciate hearing why a refund was requested. Most of the time, you'll get a response of some kind. The information you're being provided with is extremely valuable. Now, sometimes people will say something along the lines of "this eBook was a piece of junk." That's obviously not specific enough for you to be able to do anything with, so you'll have to followup and ask for more detail.

Keep in mind, too, that some people are serial refund request seekers who regularly do this. So in those cases you might not receive a response, or you might receive a response that is vague and not receive any more responses to your followup requests for more information. My point is this. Always honor refund requests immediately. But please, by all means, see if you can find out the real underlying reason why the refund request was made. It can potentially help you avoid similar refund requests in the future.
